1:00 – 1:45 p.m. Tell it to the Lawyers, Tell it to the Judges- This segment will allow participants the opportunity to talk to federal and state judges -- to ask questions relevant to the experience of practice in the United States District Court for the Southern District of Ohio and the First District Court of Appeals. Among the topics to be discussed: federal court pretrial motions practice, trial practice and procedure, and meditation practice and procedure in Cincinnati, Columbus, and Dayton. Reference will be made to the Local Rules for the Southern District of Ohio, which will be made available to participants.

1:50-2:50 p.m. Specialty Courts: What They Are, and Practical Advice for Attorneys- This segment will explore the growing types of Specialty Courts in Ohio, and provide practical advice for clients and attorneys who practice before them.

3:00 -3:30 p.m. Is the Rule of Law in Danger?- As our nation faces some of the most difficult decisions it has faced in a long time, the lack of high-quality civic education in America’s schools leaves millions of citizens without the knowledge or experience to effectively engage in our system of government. Active and engaged attorneys and citizens are critical to protecting and strengthening American democracy. Practitioners will learn ways in which they can be involved in programs and initiatives that enhance youth understanding of government, and the rights and responsibilities of citizens.

3:30 – 4:30 p.m. Judicial Management of Mediations & Settlement Conferences- This segment will allow practitioners to ask questions about, and share their experiences with, judges’ case management styles. Judges will share how mediation and settlement conferences are handled in their respective courts, and will offer perspective regarding the role of an evaluative mediator.
